Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?
It is if it saves you even a few minutes a week and your time has any real value. At $20 a month and a $30 hour, you break even at about 9 minutes of saved time a week. It is not worth it if you use it a couple of times a month and the free tier already covers you.
Is Claude Pro worth it compared with ChatGPT Plus?
Both cost $20 a month in the US, so the price math is identical. The better question is which one fits the work you do, and the free tiers of both are the cheapest way to find out. Use each on your real tasks for a week before paying for either.
Is ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max worth $100 to $200 a month?
Only if you keep hitting the usage limits on the $20 plan. The higher tiers raise limits and add priority access. They do not make each task faster, so the extra $80 to $180 has to be earned by work you could not otherwise finish.
Is Gemini Pro worth it?
Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month in the US and bundles extra storage with Gemini, so part of the price may already be value you use. The calculator treats the whole price as the cost, which makes the result conservative if you would have paid for the storage anyway.
Is Claude cheaper on the website or in the iPhone app?
The website, for Max. Claude Pro is $20 a month in both places, but Apple's App Store listed Max 5x at $124.99 and Max 20x at $249.99 a month when we checked, against $100 and $200 on Claude's own pricing page. Annual Pro was $214.99 on Apple against $200 on the web. The same account works in the app either way, so you can subscribe on the website and still use the iPhone app. We have not confirmed Google Play prices, and we did not check the in-app prices for ChatGPT or Gemini, so look at the price on your own store screen before you pay.
Are AI subscriptions cheaper in other countries?
Sometimes. Vendors set local prices and taxes, and they change. The currency selector gives a converted estimate from the US price, and the price field is editable, so type in the amount on your own bill for an accurate result.
How do I estimate hours saved?
Think about last week. Count the drafts, summaries, research sessions and debugging that took less time because of the tool, and subtract the time you spent fixing its mistakes. If you are unsure, use one hour a week and see whether the plan still clears its cost.
How does the Worth It Score work?
The score compares the value of the time you save to what the plan costs. A plan that returns five times its price scores 95, and one that returns less than half its price scores 15. Scores of 71 and above read as Worth It.
How to tell if an AI subscription is worth it
An AI plan is a simple trade: you pay a fixed monthly price and get time back. So the honest test is whether the time you get back is worth more than the price. The calculator multiplies the hours you save each week by 4.33 weeks in a month, then by what one hour of your time is worth. If you save 2 hours a week and value an hour at $30, that is 2 × 4.33 × $30 = $259.80 a month. Against a $20 plan, the net gain is $239.80 a month. Most people overestimate the hours and underestimate the editing, so the useful move is to run the math with a number that feels slightly too low. If a plan still wins at one hour a week, you can stop worrying about it.
The break-even number is the one that matters
Break even is the minutes per week you need to save for the plan to cost you nothing. It is the plan price divided by your hourly value, spread across the weeks in a month. At $20 a month and $30 an hour, that is about 9 minutes a week. That is one short email you did not have to draft. For a $100 plan at the same hourly value, break even is about 46 minutes a week, and a $200 plan needs roughly 92. Seeing it as minutes makes the decision concrete: ask yourself whether you really save 9 minutes a week, then whether you save 92.
When the $20 plans make sense, and when they do not
ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro all sit near $20 a month in the US, so the price math barely separates them. What separates them is fit. Each has a free tier, and the free tiers are good enough for light use. Pay when you run into the limits, not before. Signs you should pay: you are rationing questions, hitting message caps in the middle of real work, or you need a model or feature the free tier does not include. Signs you should not: you open the app a few times a month, or you keep the subscription because cancelling feels like admitting you forgot about it.
Is a $100 or $200 tier worth it?
The higher plans, ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max and Google AI Ultra, are built around bigger usage allowances and priority access. They do not save you more time per task. Their value is that you do not get cut off. That means the question changes from is AI worth it to do I hit the limit on the cheaper plan every week. If the answer is no, the extra cost is waste. If the answer is yes, and being cut off costs you billable hours or a deadline, the upgrade can pay for itself quickly. Test the $20 plan hard for a month first. Plan availability also changes: OpenAI's help page says new $200 Pro subscriptions are open again, with a lower usage allowance than before, and it now sells a $500 Pro tier too.
Web price versus app store price
Where you subscribe can change the price. When we checked on September 30, 2026, Claude Pro was $20 a month on both Claude's website and Apple's App Store. Claude Max 5x was $100 on the web but $124.99 through Apple, and Max 20x was $200 on the web but $249.99 through Apple. That is about 25% more, or $300 and $600 extra over a year. Annual Pro was $200 on the web and $214.99 through Apple. Apple takes a commission on in-app subscriptions, and the higher Apple price likely reflects that, though Anthropic has not said so on its pricing page. If you pick a Claude plan in the calculator, a menu lets you switch between the website and Apple price. We did not check Google Play, and we did not check in-app prices for ChatGPT or Gemini, so confirm the number on your own store screen.
Choosing an hourly value honestly
The hourly value is the assumption that does the most work in this calculator, so pick it carefully. If you are paid by the hour, use your after-tax pay if you only care about the time you would otherwise spend, or your full rate if you would genuinely use the freed hour to earn more. If you are salaried, divide your pay by the hours you actually work. If the time saved would just be leisure, a lower number is fairer. There is no wrong answer here, only an honest one, and the calculator lets you test a few values to see how sensitive the verdict is. The optional extra income box is for people who use AI to take on paid work they could not otherwise handle.
Using the calculator from another country
The currency selector converts the US list price to an estimate in pounds, euros, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars or rupees and swaps in a sensible default hourly value for that currency. Treat the converted price as a starting point. Vendors set local prices and taxes themselves, and they change, so the price field is editable on purpose. Type in the amount that actually appears on your card statement. The exchange rates used are rough, rounded estimates and are not updated live, so the result is only as accurate as the price you enter.

How We Calculate Your Score
The Worth It Score compares the monthly value of the time you save, plus any extra income, to the monthly price of the plan. Value is hours saved per week times 4.33 times your hourly value.
- · Return of 5x the price or more scores 95; 3x or more scores 85; 2x or more scores 75
- · Return of 1.5x or more scores 60; 1x or more scores 45
- · Return of 0.5x or more scores 30; below 0.5x scores 15
- · Break even in minutes per week = monthly price ÷ hourly value ÷ 4.33 × 60
The score measures financial return only. It does not account for quality differences between models, features you value for their own sake, or bundled extras such as cloud storage. US list prices were checked on September 30, 2026. Claude Apple App Store prices come from the Apple billing screen on that date; Google Play prices were not checked. Currency conversions are estimates.
